Blue Notes Workshop: CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP
Margaret Holder, an artist, educator and maker based in Suffolk, presents a showcase of her work alongside a cyanotype workshop. Her practice is interdisciplinary and experimental, focusing on themes related to diaspora and colonisation through mediums such as screen printing, photography, cyanotypes and textiles. The exhibition includes photographic images, handmade books and textiles, along with opportunities for participation through workshops and drop-in sessions. Margaret’s project 'A Windrush Story' explores her relationship with her grandmother, whom she met during a trip to Barbados as a young adult.
There, she received objects, letters and photographs that are central to this ongoing exploration of memory, location, migration and the Black experience in Britain. It also serves to document and preserve heritage, histories, stories and voices. The title 'Blue Notes' reflects her childhood affection for the colour blue, which has symbolic connections to colonialism and the African diaspora. In Barbados, indigo and cotton were significant exports before sugar became dominant. Blue Notes represents a creative engagement with a personal archive. All materials for the cyanotype workshop are provided, though participants may bring plants or flat objects.
