Exhibition - Witches: Suffolk's Dark Legacy

The Suffolk witch trials between 1645 and 1647 were among the most intense and widespread in England. A new exhibition from Suffolk Archives delves into the lives of over 150 individuals accused of witchcraft during this period, shedding light on the role of Mathew Hopkins, known as Witchfinder General.

The display includes significant historical texts such as The Malleus Maleficarum and Daemonologie by King James I, both loaned from the British Library. It also traces the transformation of the witch stereotype from the traditional old hag to modern portrayals seen in television and film, featuring works like John Waterhouse’s The Magic Circle, provided by the Tate. The exhibition highlights the enduring impact of these events on Suffolk's history.
