EVENT

Matthew Hopkins: the Witchfinder General and His Victims

Matthew Hopkins, known as the Witchfinder General, conducted a campaign of fear across East Anglia over nearly three years, accusing almost 300 individuals of witchcraft. The period coincided with significant religious and civil unrest due to the English Civil War, during which most of his targets were impoverished elderly widows, though some men also faced accusations.

Local historian Stephen Poulter will explore the methods that contributed to Hopkins' success and shed light on the lives of the women who suffered under his actions. The event is suitable for audiences aged 12 and above.
