Witchland: Recovering Suffolk's Civil War Witches talk
The English Civil War saw around 30 Suffolk communities involved in witch trials, orchestrated by the infamous witchfinders Matthew Hopkins and John Stearne. While these figures are well known, less attention has been given to those they accused. This talk explores whether it is feasible to uncover details about the lives of these individuals prior to being labeled as witches.
Marion Gibson, an Emerita Professor at Exeter University and author of Witchcraft: A History in 13 Trials and Witchland: A Tale of Witch Hunting and War in 17th Century Britain, presents new findings on three of the accused based on research conducted at Suffolk Archives and other sources. The event is part of the Witches: Suffolk's Dark Legacy exhibition, which received support from the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund and Debach Enterprises.
